The big six prep races for the Kentucky Derby are the Arkansas Derby, Blue Grass, Florida Derby, Lane's End, Santa Anita Derby, and Wood Memorial.
Your Derby horse should qualify by running a final quarter in a 25.2 seconds or less time.
To determine this:
1. Find the horse's six furlong time (adding a 1/5 second for each length behind)
2. Find the horse's final time in seconds (again, adjusting for beaten lengths)
3. Subtract the six furlong time from the final time to get the time it took to travel the last three furlongs of the race.
4. Divide the time of the last three furlongs to get the average time per furlong
5. Add the average time per furlong computed to step #4 to the six furlong time from step #1 to get the seven furlong time
6. Subtract the seven furlong time from the final time in step#2 to get the time of the last quarter
