Identifying the False Favorite

Pace and speed handicappers invariably select horses that go off at low odds and lose 2 out of three races. How can we identify these false favorites and focus on other horses that lead to bigger payoffs?

There are two statistics in the past performance records that we need to key on: class and finish position in recent races.

Take a look at the favorite and second choice. What are the owner/trainer intentions in the present race based on the horses recent efforts? What is the class of the horse; in which races does the horse race best? If the horse is dropping in class, the connections may have lost confidence in the animal. If they have, why should you have confidence to bet on the horse?
