Physical Soundness

Physical unsoundness accounts for the apparent inconsistency of many thoroughbreds. A physically unsound horse is unable to turn in two good consecutive efforts.

How can the bettor determine if a horse is sound? The secret is in the workout pattern which consists of both workouts and actual races.

Physically sound horses are worked between races, except following very recent races in which the horse was extended. Unsound horses have only one race following a recuperation period. Sound horses will have several morning workouts during the two weeks prior to the race.
