Secretariat's Heart
When the great thoroughbred Secretariat died in 1989, pathologists at Kentucky University performed an autopsy on his body. They found that he had the largest heart ever found in a thoroughbred, estimated to be approximately 22 pounds. Since the normal heart of race horse weighs around 8.5 pounds, one can conclude that Secretariat's enormous heart powered him to victories including his greatest triumph in winning the Belmont by 31 lengths in 1973.
